Four Ways to Help Your Young Child Learn English

1. Experts agree.  Art projects are one of the best ways to teach young students English vocabulary.  Children love to draw and color and paint.  Give them a subject.  For example; draw a horse jumping over a fence.  Show them a photo of a horse, a fence and jumping.  Reinforce the vocabulary as they are drawing the picture.  Then give them colors.  Tell them, color the horse blue, and while they are doing it say, it’s a blue horse.  Then tell them, color the fence red and say, a blue horse is jumping a red fence.  Finally, ask them if kangaroos jump, too.  Then tell them to draw a yellow kangaroo jumping over the blue horse.  Jump over your left hand with your right hand.  When the child is finished save the picture and put it in a place where people can see it.  Tell the child to explain in English to other people the picture.  This will help to reinforce the lesson and to build the child’s confidence.

2. Another way to help your young child learn is by playing games.  One of the best for beginners is Simon Says.  This is especially good for learning body parts.  For example, say Simon Says raise your hands.  You can expand by including left and right.  For example, Simon says raise your left foot.  Other verbs that work very well with this game are, dance, walk, run, jump, sit down or stand up.  After the child has learned these verbs, the parent can add details like walk in a circle, and then expand this to walk slowly in a circle.  Simon Says not only teaches the child new vocabulary but it also uses up the extra energy that children have.

3. Singing Songs is another good way for teaching new vocabulary.   The internet, in particular Youtube, is a fantastic place to find song.  The best time to use a song at the end of class after the new words have been learned.  Like the drawings, singing a song for other people after the class is very helpful and fun for the student as well.  Here are some examples:

4. A way that a lot of parents don’t think of is labeling.  This means writing the names of things in the house on paper and putting them next to the item.  This is one of the best ways for the students to see and use the language outside of the lesson on an every day basis.  Toys, windows, doors, etc. can be labeled.

Children learn quickly when they are having fun, and all children want to impress their parents.  These are the two keys to successfully helping you child to learn English.
